Happy February everyone! It’s so hard to believe that we are already in February and my gorgeous little man is about to turn 1! He’s definitely a little chatterbox and is almost walking. It will only be a matter of time before I have him answering the phone and mixing up herbs! I am also very proud to say he has not been sick once and is a very happy, healthy and extremely energetic little boy. As many of you know I am very particular about diet and make sure he eats predominantly organic foods, purified water and breastmilk as well as a daily dose of sunshine, flora and omegas. For his birthday I made him a sugarless cake and he loved it! Instead of making it as a whole cake I made it into muffin sized cakes – it certainly proved to be very popular with kids and adults alike. I’ve included the recipe below.

Also, Paul has decided to concentrate on his practice at Samford so I wish him all the best in his endeavours. Don’t worry however as I am currently sourcing another acupuncturist who is also a very talented massage therapist so stay tuned!

On a very sad note at the end of February Red Suva is saying farewell to Grace. Grace is currently studying a double degree in Law and Commerce and is leaving the clinic to concentrate more fully on her studies. She will be sadly missed but Noah and I have just loved having her in the clinic and are grateful for the time she has been able to give us.

Noah’s Birthday Cake

2 cups sliced carrots
3 cups unsweetened apple juice
½ cup spinach, chopped
1 ripe banana
1 cup sweetened dried cranberries
1 tablespoon ground almonds
2 cups whole wheat self raising flour
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
¼ cup olive oil
2 eggs
3 egg whites beaten
1 cup Pure Apple Puree

Optional frosting/filling ideas
2 cups fresh blueberries
1 package of soft cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tbsp agave nectar

Method
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 cake pans.
Combine carrots with 2 cups of the apple juice in medium saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover the pain and simmer for 15 minutes, or until carrots are soft.
Place carrot mixture in blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Add spinach, banana, cranberries, and almonds. Puree until smooth. Set aside.
Combine the flour, flaxseed and cinnamon in a separate mixing bowl. Add remaining 1 cup of apple juice, vanilla extract, and eggs and egg whites. Mix until well blended. Fold in the apple puree and the reserved carrot / spinach puree.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

Frosting: Steam blueberries until soft

Place softened blueberries, cream cheese, vanilla extract and agave in a food processor. Process until well blended. Spread on the cooled cake.

When was the last time you detoxed your skin?
We are exposed to toxins every day in the home, office, environment and even from many of the foods we eat, especially processed foods. Over time toxins build up and can overload our digestive system and liver, potentially affecting their ability to function efficiently. But what about our skin? When it comes to skin types there is really only 3 – Dry, Oily and Diffused Redness. The diffused redness type is what I would like to talk about because I see many clients with redness. We often consider them to be a sensitive skin type when in fact they’re not, I know I have done this in the past. For example, the client may be sensitive because they have compromised their skin dramatically with unsuitable products and bad lifestyle choices. Whatever they apply to their skin irritates it, resulting in the belief they have a sensitive skin type, when in fact, often, we can rectify the health of the skin through good diet, skin care and treatments, resulting in the skin not being sensitive. This is different from being allergic to ingredients. Diffused redness can be a result of thin skin which has a lack of framework, the connective tissue, otherwise known as extracellular matrix in the dermis and loss of fat cells. The epidermis and dermis have blended together as one and we see lots of capillaries close to the surface of the skin. In this example the skin needs to be strengthened with ingredients that are going to heal and promote health within our layers of skin, which aids the skin into looking healthier with an even tone. We should be thinking about the cells working in the lower layers of our skin and what ingredients are going to heal and benefit.

On that note, let’s look at the Organic Spa Clay Mask – all ingredients are chirally correct and more than 60% of ingredients are absorbed into the skin. We are going to promote collagen growth, strengthen the connective tissue to firm up the layers of the skin, which will reduce the appearance of the capillaries resulting in a more even skin tone. It will also diminish toxic oils and bacteria to leave a clean and healthy looking skin.

Let’s look at the Clay Mask key ingredients.

As with all Organic Spa products, the main ingredient is:
Aloe Vera
Anti bacterial
Anti inflammatory
Anti Viral
Only known natural vegetarian source of Vitamin B12 which contains minerals vital for the growth, healing and dividing process of our cells.
Promotes white cell production to fight off infections.
Contains enzymes and amino acids crucial for rejuvenating aged tissues and promoting healthy skin.

Green Tea
High Anti oxidant
Anti bacterial
Anti Virus
Incredible healing properties

Gota Kola
Known as one of the most important rejuvenative herbs in Ayervedic medicine. The herb prevents infection and can inhibit scar formation. Gota Kola encourages collagen production.
It promotes:
Skin health
Cleanses skin of impurities
Speeds up healing process and
Strengthen capillaries

Bilberry
Is another potent anti oxidant which aids in strengthening the skin which aids in diminishing obvious capillaries. It maintains flexibility of red blood cells which enables them to supply oxygen throughout the capillaries leading to healthier skin. Bilberry supports normal function of connective tissue and also is a tyrosinase enzyme inhibitor.
Anti fungal
Anti bacterial
Anti inflammatory.

Kaolin
Has been used for its cleansing, detoxifying and exfoliating properties since ancient times. It is an ideal ingredient for damaged skin, especially acne. Kaolin controls sebum production and removes toxins and excess oils from the skin but does not dry the skin.
Anti inflammatory
Cleansing
Clarifies
Heals
Soothes
Nourishes

Bentonite
Again this clay has been used for its benefits since ancient times. It is believed the clay constricts the pores which aids in eliminating impurities from the skin, although it does also work as a sponge to draw toxins from the face and body which relieve abscesses and acne. It is also anti-bacterial and cleansing.

All these key ingredients are going to make a huge difference to your skin, both visibly and within the cells of your skin. If treating acne, use the Clay Mask twice a week and then weekly for maintenance once the acne has diminished.

Pop on a mask once a week to feed the skin with beneficial ingredients that are going to make a difference. Remembering that home care makes up 70% of any salon treatments you may have you need to be religious with your home care routine.
